I have a beautiful tablecloth with a strawberry design signed Elsa.  As far as I can find it was probably done by Elsa Sunderlnd in 1943.  Elsa was known as a pioneer in textile design in the 40's and 50's.  Does anyone know the value of this tablecloth?  It is in excellent condition.

Those Elsa cloths are fairly rare. The strawberry pattern was very popular and there are likely folks who would want it for nostalgia reasons. As to a dollar value, it is hard to say. We know it only takes two people to drive a price up during an auction but if no one notices, a cloth can go for very little. Strawberry patterns are always popular though!

Thank you for your reply. It is so beautiful - the strawberries are so realistic - the colors are so bright.
I love these old cloths. Wish I could save all of them.

I got to thinking.... would you be willing to share a picture of the cloth? Either here or at this email address?

info@vintagetableclothloversclub.com

Two of us are working on a chart of information about tablecloth designers and we have included Elza. The only picture we have of that strawberry print is a black and white copy from an old newspaper ad. I would love to include a color picture of this cloth. I also own an Elza design cloth but these two designs are the only ones for which we have any information. Yours was sold as yardage and used for tablecloths, curtains, etc. Also, now that I think about it her name was Elza, with a “z”. Spell check does not like that though! 😃 Do you have any other information about your tablecloth? Where or when it was purchased for example? As a club we are always looking for this kind of information and have a member database of over 2000 identified tablecloths.

Hi,  I'll try to send some photos.  I'm not very good with the computer.  This tablecloth was purchased at an estate sale earlier this year.
You'll see from the design it was intended for a square table rather than yardage.   IMG_0496.jpg  .  It measures 47"x 54".

Tablecloth measures 47"x 54" and was an estate find.

Thank you! You’re right this is not yardage, but this is likely one called “Strawberries and Ivy”. We might now have pictures of three of her cloths! I’ll check my notes later. For me, this is really exciting!

Interesting that some of her tablecloths are signed Elza with a "z" and some are signed Elsa with an "s". It's a very pretty strawberry design!

I have more information to add here but right now am buried in copyright and public use questions. When I get some answers I will post more. I think I will only be able to post links, we’ll see. The good news is that I already owned two Elza tablecloths and in the last two days have purchased three more. All, sort of by “accident”/good luck. The tablecloth gods are with me!

Yeah! More Eliza tablecloths. Maybe she signed her name with a “z” like Liza with a Z.

All of her signatures that I have seen so far have been with a "z" except on a cloth Gayle refers to above. But I realized I can post two additional pictures of her cloths since I own them, one is still in the mail coming from Karen, but the other was in my cabinet! I am so excited! None of the pictures I have found on line are in the public domain so now I have to request/buy photography and/or get permission from the copyright owner. What a process! But a real person answered my email inquiry this time so I am encouraged. Enjoy these pics. both of which I have verified are Elza Sunderland designs. Neither are signed.
